Maxwell's Namesake

Maxwell Elementary, opened in 1998,  is named after Mrs. Jessie Whaley Maxwell (1909-2002), the first African-American Administrator in the Denver Public Schools and the state of Colorado.  Mrs. Maxwell believed that every child deserved an opportunity to learn.  She encouraged all students to strive for excellence.

Mrs. Maxwell was named principal of east Denver’s Whittier Elementary in 1955, where she served until 1966. She then became principal of Columbine Elementary school until her retirement in 1972.

At the dedication of Jessie Whaley Maxwell Elementary Ms. Maxwell said, “ It is humbling to think of this school dedication. But this is more than mine. It’s a symbol of the progress that has been made.”

Mrs. Maxwell touched the lives of tens of thousands of children over her teaching career including Wilma Webb, former first lady of Denver, who attended Whittier Elementary during Mrs. Maxwell's tenure. Mrs. Maxwell also inspired many students to follow in her footsteps into the career of education.

Maxwell Elementary is proud to continue Mrs. Maxwell's legacy.  The Maxwell Dolphins Faculty and Staff believe that every child is capable of brillance and we encourage children to strive for excellence every day.
